LAME MP3 Labs

Technical comparisons

Measured LAME build behaviour

The Labs section contains focused comparisons of LAME builds. Measurements are presented separately from listening-test conclusions, so speed, file size, bitrate and DeltaWave residuals can be interpreted in their proper context.

Lab pages

VBR DeltaWave closeness compares the VBR/cVBRb outputs against the original WAV using extracted residual metrics.

ABR DeltaWave closeness keeps the ABR residual metrics separate, including the current 4.0 MinGW and Visual Studio ABR boost rows.

VBR and ABR frequency response are now separate pages because their upper-band behaviour and chart scales differ.

How to read these pages

Reference closenessLower residuals mean a closer measured match to the original WAV in DeltaWave, not a guaranteed audible improvement.
Frequency responseThe frequency pages use extracted aligned-spectrum plots and derived upper-band metrics. VBR and ABR are kept separate to avoid mixing chart scales.
Speed linksSpeed data is kept separate and used only as context for a hypothesis, not as proof of cause.

FAQ

What do the Labs pages cover?

They cover technical build comparisons that need more detail than the main download table, including DeltaWave residuals, frequency response, speed and output-size measurements.

Are these pages quality rankings?

No. The labs pages show measured behaviour and diagnostic context. They avoid turning DeltaWave or visual plots into listening-test verdicts.
